Meet Chimee.
Chimee was introduced to Brahmin by her aunt, who has been wearing Brahmin bags for years. We first connected with Chimee on social media and learned her story of becoming a first time mother through fostering earlier this year. We immediately thought of her when we began thinking about how we would celebrate moms within our Brahmin community this Mother's Day. We reached out to learn more and to share her story here.
How it Started
I wanted to be a mother for a very long time. I got married, divorced and slowly realized my dreams of being a mother might not happen. At least that’s what I kept telling myself. I was a social worker for a while and when I decided to switch careers I made a promise to myself to change the life of at least one of the children that I’ve worked to protect while I was in that field. Like many others, the pandemic was really eye opening for me. I started to think about the things I wanted most, and one of them was to be a mother. I was still single and struggled with the thought of doing it alone, then Covid really kicked things into gear for me.
Fostering to Adopt
I made the decision to start the foster to adopt process. While on lockdown I completed the courses. I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want anyone to talk me out of my decision.
A Connection that was Meant to be
First Mother’s Day as ‘Mom’
This Mother’s Day will feel so special because I now know what that unconditional love is between a mother and their child. This will be a special day for my baby girl too. She’s so excited! She has been talking about Mother’s Day since the first few weeks we met.
Considering Fostering or Adopting?
Listen to that voice in your head. If it’s telling you to do it, do it! Don’t wait for the “right time” because you’ll constantly keep changing what that time would be for you. Lastly, don’t give up, this journey is not easy but it’s so rewarding.
Life Has Changed
My life has changed drastically because I now have someone else that depends on me. I have to plan my outings when I used to just get up and go. I lived a pretty carefree life. I look at things totally different; like what are the best schools, pediatricians and dentists in the area. I am always thinking, ‘what can I do to make sure she lives the best life possible’. I want to instill that no matter what life throws her way, she’s the captain of her destiny.
